FAQs
We are part of the Thomas Armstrong Group
Hollowcore Flooring are prestressed precast concrete slabs featuring continuous cylindrical voids which run internally down the length of each precast slab. The number of voids varies depending on size and strength, with a key advantage of reducing the overall weight when compared to other floor slabs of equal thickness and strength.
The lightweight nature of this precast floor system offers additional benefits due to significant saving in transportation, material and labour costs. It also enables longer spans with a decreased depth ratio to be manufactured without compromising on strength and durability. Hollowcore Flooring can also be known as slabs or planks.
Hollowcore flooring is suitable for a range of applications including commercial buildings, car parks, offices, apartments and in all types of housing. Each precast floor slab is placed side by side and sealed with a grouted joint to provide a durable flooring solution which has a fast installation and can support even heavy loads. Designed to easily fit into any structural system, whether it is steel, in-situ, precast or concrete masonry, at ACP (Concrete) Ltd our precast concrete planks are typically 1200mm wide and are available in standard depths from 150mm to 500m. The spans of Hollowcore floor can be up to 20.5m.
Prestressed precast concrete floors provide our customers with a quick and cost-effective form of flooring construction which enables the Principal Contractor to progress in most cases to the next level of construction within a day of the Hollowcore Flooring being installed, saving you time and money.
All our prestressed precast concrete planks are all CE marked and designed and manufactured to Eurocode 2 industry standards.

High Performance at Low Cost
At ACP (Concrete) Ltd, our prestressed precast concrete floor slabs or planks are manufactured off-site in controlled factory environment conditions to recognised industry standards (EC2).
Extruded from high quality steel moulds using quality assured engineering grade concrete (60 N/mm²), guarantees the quality and performance of all our prestressed precast concrete flooring products. It also enables us to supply high performance Hollowcore Flooring at low cost.
Available as supply only or supply and install, all our precast concrete floor slabs are delivered nationwide.
Fast and Simple Installation
The prestressed concrete floor slabs are delivered on-site already ‘made to measure’ and ready for immediate use. Installation is fast and straightforward as the prestressed precast concrete floor slabs are put into place quickly and safely using a crane; therefore, reducing the time spent by workers on-site. The concrete slabs are then simply fixed by following the design drawing provided that shows each unit with an individual code reference to ensure quick and easy identification for a simple installation.
Horizontal Joints are then sealed using C25 concrete to provide a finished floor area. Installation is largely independent of weather conditions and helps prevent unnecessary delays to your project.

Fast and Simple Installation continued
Due to off-site manufacturing and readily available installation, there is a minimum amount of curing of concrete required on site, making this an ideal cost-effective flooring solution.
Prestressed precast concrete floors provide our customers with an immediately available structure as a working platform for follow-on trades. This a quick and cost-effective form of flooring construction which enables the Principal Contractor to progress in most cases to the next level of construction within a day of the Hollowcore Flooring being installed, saving you time and money. The voids are sometimes used as service ducts for plumbing, electrical cable or data transmission systems.
Durable
The term "prestressed concrete" (also known as pre-tensioned concrete) means that concrete is poured onto steel strands which have been tensioned. After the concrete has reached the required strength the strands are de-tensioned. The cured concrete adheres and bonds to the strands and when the tension is released it is transferred to the concrete as compression by static friction. This gives the panels additional strength and enables them to flex under load without detriment.
By utilising the inherent strengths of the two materials, the performance of a prestressed panel can far exceed that of a precast section reinforced with a similar amounts of reinforcing bar or mesh.
The durability is also enhanced. In a standard reinforced section, the reinforcement only really comes into play once the concrete is in tension or has hairline cracks. In prestressed units the reinforcement is “working” in all conditions.
Overall precast concrete structures have longer service years and require minimal repairs and maintenance.
High sound Resistance and Fire Resistance
Hollowcore floors have a lower sound transmission when compared through the equivalent solid slab (any % available), therefore making this ideal for additional sound proofing particularly suitable for schools, apartments and businesses.
Our floor slabs comply with Euro code 2 and have a 1hr fire rating.
Thermal Efficiency
Hollowcore flooring offers excellent thermal characteristics which results in reducing energy consumption use in heating and cooling of structures.
Product Sizes & Performance Specifications
Wide range of sizes to suit various spans and loads
At ACP (Concrete) Ltd, our prestressed precast concrete floor slabs are manufactured in a range of longer sizes to suit various spans and loads, providing flexible and tailored solutions to suit each application.
One advantage with this flooring solution is due to the lower weight created by the symmetrical voids. This enables longer spans to be manufactured, which is particularly beneficial if supporting columns are unfeasible, undesirable or in applications such as multi-storey car parks. It can also provide valuable additional space by reducing the number of beams and columns required for support. The voids are sometimes used as service ducts for plumbing, electrical cable or data transmission systems.

Brief Overview: How to install Prestressed Precast Hollowcore Flooring
Hollowcore Flooring can be installed directly from the delivery vehicle using a crane to its final position due to each unit being referenced individually to suit the approved ACP (Concrete) Limited design drawing.
The units are lifted in using the choke hitch method with one unit in each individual bay of the drawing having lifting pins cast into them to place it into its final position.
Once all the units have been installed the C35 concrete grout is placed in the joints to tie the floor together.
